CHENNAI: The distribution of free tickets for women in government city or town buses across the state since Monday has increased their footfalls by roughly 20%.
While women accounted for 40% of commuters in these buses in normal times, more than 78 lakh women travelled in 7,291 buses in the last three days, nearly 60% of the total patronage, shows official data.
Transport minister R S Rajakannappan said that in order to ensure safer commute of women passengers in Chennai, the government planned to install CCTV cameras in 2,500 Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) buses at Rs 71 crore using Nirbhaya funds.
The transport department had made such announcements several times in the past during budget sessions, said activist R Rengachari. “But nothing materialised so far. We hope the new government makes it a reality,” he said.
Since Monday, footfalls of even transsexuals (5,741) and differently abled (51,615) in MTC and other city buses, with MTC deciding to operate more buses in high-demand areas.
Until last week, close to seven lakh people travelled by 2,300 MTC buses every day. This week, 400 more buses were operated and the numbers are expected to go up in the coming week with more relaxations expected, said a senior MTC official.
As far as buses to Puducherry were concerned, TNSTC Villupuram is operating 364 buses to the union territory and nearly half of them leave from Koyambedu Bus Terminus.
The transport minister had also announced that plans are underway to resume water bottle manufacturing at Institute of Road Transport (IRT), Gummidipoondi. Around 80,000 one-litre ‘Amma’ water bottles were manufactured at this IRT unit and sold at bus stands across the state for ₹10 each. But since last June, sales came to a halt in Tamil Nadu.
Along with one-litre bottles, we are studying the possibility of manufacturing half litre bottles too, said Rajakannappan.
