CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu chief minister M K Stalin on Friday said “we will follow” social reformer ‘Periyar’ E V Ramasamy’s principles to establish an equalitarian society. The state government observed Periyar’s birth anniversary as the ‘Day of Social Justice.’
Periyar sowed the seeds of social justice among all sections of the society, including judiciary, legislatures and parliamentarians, said Stalin in a statement. The CM led the government in paying floral tributes to the leader and taking the pledge at secretariat. Ministers, MPs, chief secretary, senior bureaucrats and government officials also took the pledge to follow the principles of social justice.
“We offer our respect to him as his birth helped the Tamils grow as honourable and knowledgeable society,” said Stalin, who made the announcement on September 6 under Rule 110 in the state assembly that the government would celebrate Periyar’s birth anniversary every year as the ‘Day of Social Justice’.
Oppressed class and women ascended because of the social reformer. “We will establish an equalitarian society by following your (Periyar) path of social justice,” the CM said. Stalin and his cabinet colleagues have also paid floral tribute to the statue of Periyar on the Anna Salai earlier on the day. They also took pledge at party headquarters Anna Arivalayam along with senior party functionaries and cadres.
Former CM and joint coordinator of AIADMK Edappadi K Palaniswami and senior party leaders C Ponnaiyan, D Jayakumar and S Valarmathi paid floral tribute to Periyar’s portrait that was placed near his statue at Anna Salai.
Former CM and coordinator of AIADMK O Panneerselvam posted a message in social media, hailing Periyar and his contribution to the society, to pay his respect to the social reformer.
MDMK leader Vaiko, and leaders of communist parties have also paid their tribute to the social reformer at different places. PMK leader S Ramadoss, AMMK leader T T V Dhinakaran, MNM leader Kamal Haasan and leaders of various political parties have also paid their tribute to Periyar on his 143rd birth anniversary.
VCK leader Thol Thirumavalavan paid tributes to Periyar statue on the Anna Salai and took the pledge of social justice along with party functionaries. Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan took to social media and paid his respect for the social reformer. Vijayan tweeted in Tamil.
