Thane: Five dead after getting trapped under mudslide in Gholai Nagar slums at Kalwa | Thane News – Times of India

THANE: As many as five people including three minors from two shanties in Gholai Nagar slums at Kalwa died after they got trapped under a massive mudslide that slid off the Parsik hill slopes following a heavy downpour in the area, Monday afternoon.
Two others escaped with injuries.
According to municipal officials, the incident was reported around 1 pm when the sludge accumulated along the slopes slipped off and came rushing down along the natural streamflow and submerged the shanties standing in close proximity.
As many as four huts that were at the top level of the cluster of hutments were affected badly. Seven residents from two huts got completely buried, trapping the residents inside while those from others rushed out hearing the huge noise.
Santosh Kadam, chief at the regional disaster management cell informed that all the deceased were from the Yadav family staying in one of the shanties that were completely buried in the slush. The deceased have been identified as Prabhu Yadav, his wife Vidyawati, and three children aged between three to 12 years.
Local activist Arvind More, who was in the area said they heard the noise and rushed uphill and to their horror, found the huts submerged and immediately started rescuing those trapped.
The injured were immediately shifted to the local Kalwa hospital.
Cabinet minister and MLA Jitendra Awahad who represents the area said he has been following up the issue with the forest department for removal of the illegal shanties that have come up on the stretch.
