HYDERABAD: At a time when over 18,000 schools in the state have conducted physical classes for students from class 6 to class 10, Covid-19 tests have not been conducted in even 2% of the schools.
In the state, teams from the health department have conducted tests only in 226 schools and residential institutions in the last 15 to 20 days. Initially, Rapid Antigen Tests were conducted and if positive cases were reported from a school or hostel, all the remaining students and staff gave their samples for RTPCR.
“Tests are mainly conducted when a teacher or a staff member encounters a student with high temperature or other symptoms such as skin rash or cold,” said an official.
Government teachers too said no tests have been conducted in a majority of schools and added if tests are conducted positive cases will be found in each and every school. They said instead of shutting down schools and other educational institutions, the state should get all teachers, irrespective of age, vaccinated and conducted regular Covid-19 tests, at least once a week or 10 days.
