CHENNAI: Nearly 46 years after a police sub-inspector, now retired, abandoned a woman within seven months of marriage, the victim managed to get an FIR registered against him through a court order on Friday. The victim is 65 now and the accused retired as a special sub-inspector. Their daughter, who is 42 now, is a mother of two children.
Vijayabalan has been booked under Sections 294(b) (abusing), 494 (marrying again when the wife is alive) and 509 (insult to the modesty of women) the IPC and when contacted, police said a hunt has been launched for Vijayabalan since his whereabouts is not known. Police said the victim married Vijayabalan in 1975. While the couple stayed in different parts of the city for the next seven months, Vijayabalan allegedly ditched her when she was pregnant. He claimed he was going to Hyderabad in search of a job but didn’t return.
A decade later, the woman, who raised her 10-year-old daughter alone, came to know that Vijayabalan joined the police department and married another woman. She sought police action. However, Vijayabalan allegedly said he was not the father of the girl. In 2010, the victim’s daughter moved court. A DNA test result found Vijayabalan was the biological father of the victim’s daughter. Since the victim lodged a fresh complaint, a case was registered.
