CHENNAI: Active cases in Tamil Nadu crossed the 25,000 mark on Tuesday even as the state added 3,645 cases and 15 deaths to its Covid registry. The case tally touched 9.07 lakh (9,07,124) and cumulative death toll touched 12,804. By afternoon, after discharging 1,809 patient, public health officials revised the active cases list to 25,598.
Besides 3,612 people in the state, 33 people who travelled into the state were tested positive. This includes one person from Qatar, 19 from West Bengal, five each from AP and Bihar, two people from Madhya Pradesh and one from Uttar Pradesh. As cases went up, doubling period for the infection came down to 182 days.
With 1,303 new cases, Chennai reported the maximum number of new cases pushing the active cases in the metro to 9,755. After Chennai, its neighbour Chengalpet (304) reported the highest number of cases. While Tiruvallur and Kancheepuram reported 165 and 137 cases, Coimbatore reported 281 new cases. Three other districts – Thanjavur (121), Madurai (120) and Trichy (117) – reported cases in three digits while Tiruppur, Vellore and Tirunelveli reported 98, 97 and 93 new cases. The lowest number of cases were reported in Perambalur (1) followed by Ariyalur (3).
Public health officials said the increase in cases in Chennai, Chengalpattu, Coimbatore, Tiruvallur and Thanjavur were a cause for concern. “We are now seeing a cascading effect of cases in other districts too,” he said. Chennai and Chengalpet reported five deaths each, Thanjavur reported two and three other districts Coimbatore, Tiruvallur and Tiruvannamalai reported one death each.
Meanwhile, 21,067 people including 8467 senior citizens and 11635 above 45 years took vaccines on Tuesday. Officials said they did not expect huge turn outs as it was election day. In the last 72 days, 33.35lakh people have taken the vaccines in TN, according to the directorate of public health.
