PUDUCHERRY: The Union territory of Puducherry decided not to extend the levy on special excise duty on alcoholic beverages from April 8. Deputy commissioner (excise) T Sudhakar passed a notification in this regard on April 7.
The move brings down the prices of alcoholic beverages. The territorial administration imposed a 25% levy on special excise duty on liquor products sold in the territory from June last year to mobilize funds to battle Covid-19. The levy was extended periodically until March 31.
“From today, April 8, 2021, the price regime that was in existence before the imposition of special excise duty will be restored,” lieutenant governor (additional charge) Tamilisai Soundararajan said in a statement on Thursday.
She said approval was accorded to the proposal submitted by the excise department to scrap the validity of the special excise duty.
She directed the retailers, bars and restaurants serving liquor especially the liquor outlets on the Puducherry-Tamil Nadu border to ensure that all Covid-19 safety norms are followed.
