CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu chief minister M K Stalin on Friday launched the Palmyra Development Mission at an outlay of Rs 3 crore.
Keeping his promise made in the recently held budget session, speaker M Appavu gifted one lakh palmyra seeds to the agriculture department in the presence of the chief minister at the secretariat.
“The chief minister launched the Palmyra Development Mission, plantation of one lakh seeds presented by the speaker on lake bunds, roadside and farmlands,” said an official release.
Palmyra is a state tree. Considering the sharp decline of areas under palmyra, the state government announced that action would be taken to distribute 76 lakh palmyra seeds and one lakh palmyra seedlings to the famers in 30 districts with full subsidy.
Presenting the state’s first agriculture budget, minister M R K Panneerselvam had said that permission from the collector would be made mandatory for cutting palmyras under unavoidable circumstances.
