Mumbai: MMRDA demolishes 15 structures, BJP and locals protest | Mumbai News – Times of India

MUMBAI: Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) demolished around 15 structures, including commercial and residential, as part of its plans to construct the Pushpark Metro station of Line 7 at Kurar village in Western Suburbs.
The demolition was undertaken by BMC on behalf of MMRA which is executing the Metro corridor. Locals lodged protest, supported by local BJP MLA Atul Bhatkalkar who claimed that the demolition act was against the High Court directive which prohibits such activities due to prevailing coronavirus situation and monsoon.
Bhatkalkar said, “The demolition notice was served at midnight to a few people. The demolition squad began its work at 7 am when people were already struggling due to heavy rains. The power supply was disconnected and some were even locked up. Many did not even get notice.”
He said the locals should be provided rehabilitation in the locality as has been done for the Metro 3 (Colaba-Bandra-Seepz) project in Girgaum-Kalbadevi.
Metropolitan Commissioner SVR Srinivas said, “Those affected had obtained a stay order from the sessions court, which vacated it on Friday. The demolition is necessary as staircase and escalators have to be built for Pushpa Park station. We will provide alternate accommodation to those affected.”
The work on the project began three years and the MMRDA has missed deadlines on several occasions absence of Right of Way and COVID-induced lockdown.
Bhatkalkar alleged that the MMRDA is providing accommodation in one of the Project Affected People (PAP) buildings in Goregaon west. He said the construction at this site is of poor quality. Last week an 8-year old boy had died after the ceiling in one of these buildings collapsed.
Line 7 will run between Dahisar and Western Express Highway, Andheri. The trails for Line and Line 2 (DN Nagar to Dahisar via Link road) is underway and MMRDA plans to open Phase I of both this corridor by January 2022.
