Mumbai: 335 prisoners vaccinated in Arthur Road Jail | Mumbai News – Times of India

MUMBAI: In six hours, 335 prisoners including 35 from the Anda (egg-shaped) cell were vaccinated in the Arthur Road jail on Tuesday. The camp was organised in a joint venture of the prison authorities and Project Mumbai, a city-based NGO. Those vaccinated included eight foreign nationals lodged in the jail.
There are 2,950 prisoners lodged at the jail as of Tuesday while its official capacity is 804. “The vaccination started at 9am and went on smoothly. At one point, the resting room was vacated and all the 35 Anda cell inmates were brought and given vaccination,” said a source.
Those vaccinated were in the age group between 30 years and 44 years. On June 1, as many as 169 prisoners, all of them who were 45-year-olds and above, were vaccinated as part of a special camp.
“This is one more step in the direction of getting as many citizens with lesser privileges vaccinated. Over the next one week, we shall be able to have inmates of Arthur Road and Byculla jails fully vaccinated,” said Shishir Joshi, CEO and founder of Project Mumbai. The vaccination was done in a barrack and the nearby room was used as resting room / observation room. An ambulance was also stationed outside the jail to handle any emergency. Before such camps in the jail, 244 prisoners (45 years and above) were vaccinated at Kasturba hospital.
Arthur Road jail, built in 1925, is one of the most sensitive and overcrowded prisons in the state. It has 540 hardened inmates, arrested under the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act or MCOCA, 400 inmates accused arrested in murder cases, 80 facing terror charges and 138 foreign nationals. During 2020, over a hundred Covid-19 cases among prisoners and more than 40 among the jail staff also reported.
A team of doctors was vaccinating all the prisoners who were brought from their barracks and given paracetamol too after vaccination. “The inmates were asking questions like whether the vaccination will have any side effects etc. Some of them were even seen excited to take a jab,” said a source.
