CHENNAI: AIADMK Rajya Sabha member A Mohammed John died of a cardiac arrest on Tuesday evening. He was 72.
Mohammed John, who was at his home in Mosque Street in Ranipet, complained of a chest pain when he was getting ready to participate in an AIADMK election campaign. He was rushed to Ranipet District Headquarters Hospital where he was declared “brought dead”. He was campaigning for AIADMK candidate S M Sugumar in Ranipet constituency.
Mohammed John defeated DMK’s R Gandhi in Ranipet constituency in the 2011 assembly polls. He was a minister in the J Jayalalithaa government. He held the portfolio of backward class, most backward class and minorities welfare.
After he supported the Centre’s Citizen Amendment Bill in the upper house of parliament and voted in favour of it, the Muslim people in the constituency protested against him. He was removed from a post he held in the local jamaath.
DMK president M K Stalin and PMK leader S Ramadoss expressed their condolence over the death of the MP.
