Madras University awards PhD degree posthumously to retired Lt General of Army | Chennai News – Times of India

CHENNAI: University of Madras on Wednesday awarded a PhD degree posthumously to Lt General Subroto Mitra who did a research work on terrorism, security challenges to India and its neighbouring countries.
University vice-chancellor S Gowri gave the doctorate degree certificate to Lt General Mitra’s wife Pushpita Mitra at an event here.
“Subroto Mitra has analysed the cross border terrorism and ways to prevent it future in his thesis work. It is an important research work done by a field officer. The university takes pride in awarding this degree certificate to his family members,” Gowri said.
Pushpita thanked the university for recognising the hard work done by her husband. His daughter Radhika Mitra was also present during the award of the degree.
“Terrorism assumes different forms and manifest different ways. The thesis brought out emerging new forms and issues of terrorism including cyber terrorism. Subroto Mitra also recommended ways on how nations should counter these issues, cooperate among themselves and be prepared,” said Utham Kumar Jamadhagni, head, department of defence and strategic studies.
“A researcher may not have had the exposure that the Lt General had. He personally dealt with issues of terrorism when he served in Jammu and Kashmir, northeast and had first-hand knowledge. That is why it is very, very significant. The family asked permission from the university to publish the research work,” he added.
Subroto Mitra registered for PhD with the Madras University in 2013 while serving as General Officer Commanding (GOC) Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala area. Within two-years after retiring as the General Officer Commanding Headquarters Delhi Area in 2015, Subroto Mitra passed away. But he had submitted his thesis report to the university. Based on the precedence, the university decided to award the PhD degree posthumously to the Army officer.
