The runway was was closed due to maintenance work since June 2020.
As the south runway is already operational, KIA will become the first airport in India t have parallel operational runways.
KIA sources said the much-awaited approval from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) came early on Thursday and flight operations commenced immediately on the runway.
The runway has got a facelift with the strengthening of the surface with layers of asphalt and additional taxiways with LED centre line and edge lights.
The twin runway means that Bengaluru Airport will have less taxiing time for aircraft and more number of flight operations in the coming days.
Earlier with the south runway, there was a minimum taxiing time of 15 minutes.
