GURUGRAM: In its effort to make the city’s oldest market pedestrian-friendly, MCG began the second phase of the vehicle-free trial in Sadar bazar from Thursday.
For the 15-day trial, the civic body has increased the number of designated parking spaces from seven to nine. While cars won’t be allowed in the market, the entry of two-wheelers of customers will not be stopped as in the first week-long trial run last month. Civil defence volunteers will also be deployed in the market to request customers to park their vehicles at designated places and avail the free e-rickshaw service.
However, officials said that challans will be issued to owners of cars and three-wheelers, if found plying or parked in the market. Moreover, if supply vehicles are found in the market after 12 pm, they will be impounded and the vehicle owner will be issued a challan. Jitender Kumar, joint commissioner-2, MCG, said, “We have increased the number of parking slots to nine. We have deployed 15 e-rickshaws in the market, which will provide free-of-cost service to the customers. The volunteers of the civil defence will request the customers to park their vehicles in the designated spaces and avail the free e-rickshaw service.”
MCG officials held a meeting with the traderson Thursday, after which the decision to start the second trial run was taken. At the meeting, it was decided that any illegal extension of the shop owners will be sealed. Moreover, illegal advertisement boards and hoardings will also be removed from the market.
“A meeting of the traders was called by MCG on Thursday. It was decided that challans will be issued to the owners of vehicles (cars, three-wheelers and supply vehicles) if found in the market,” Roshan Lal Mangla, chairman of the Sadar Bazar Market Association, told TOI.
