The entire target population of about 12,000 in eight villages in Ballari and Vijayanagar district has been fully vaccinated (both doses), making these villages the first in Kalyana Karnataka to achieve the feat, the health department said.
Officials said Hagaribommanahalli taluk (BG Halli, Shivanand Nagar, Military Bayalu Pradesh), Harapanahalli (Shankarhalli, Udayapur) and Huvinahadagali (Arahalli Tanda, Hosalli), and Sandur in Devigiri taluk have all received two doses. a Covid-19 vaccine.
“The objective was achieved with support from local elected representatives and continuous review and motivation,” said Dr HL Janardhan, district health officer, Ballari. “Our staff and anganwadi and ASHA workers put in a lot of effort to achieve this milestone. Within a couple of months, we will administer both doses to the entire eligible population in the district.”
Local health officials say while there was not much vaccine hesitancy, they did conduct door-todoor campaigns and regular follow-ups.
“Initially, some people in our village were fearful of the vaccine because of rumours, but we spoke to them and addressed their concerns. They were quickly convinced about the benefits of inoculation,” said a gram panchayat member from Arahalli. He said the village was severely affected during the second wave.
Gadilingappa Moteger from Devigiri said there was no hesitancy in his village since most residents were aware of the importance of the vaccine. “Loal health department officials also put in a lot of effort to complete the drive,” he said.
