Crime News: Finance firm employees cheated company of Rs 1.65 cr

A branch manager of a Kerala-based finance firm, its assistant branch manager, a senior employee and four others including two women have been accused of cheating the firm of Rs 1.65 crore between July 22 and August 14 this year. Regional manager of Manappuram Finance Naresh Lingampeth has filed a complaint with the Basaveshwara Nagar police who have taken up a case of cheating and criminal breach of trust against seven accused and are investigating further.

In his complaint to the police, Lingampeth stated that he, the regional manager, takes care of around 60 branches of his firm in Bengaluru and districts nearby. There is just one area manager for 10 branches.

The area manager taking care of one of the firm’s branches in Manjunathanagar noticed discrepancies in their accounts. Though there was no business shown, big amounts were being shunted.

An audit was done and the branch conducted an internal inquiry where they found that the branch manager Veeranna (25) and the assistant branch manager Naveen S (24) had colluded with an employee Sandeep J (30) and with Sandeep’s family members and associates to dupe the finance firm on two occasions.

Sandeep introduced one Ramesh as his uncle, and one of his friends Girish, and his uncle’s wife Sangeeta and his own mother Bhagya, who came to the office on July 27 and told the finance heads that Ramesh has nearly three kg of gold which he would like to pledge and before that he asked if the firm could sanction some loans. Based on their request, loans were sanctioned to the tune of nearly 73 lakh for which no collaterals, bonds, gold, or land documents were collected by the firm. Later, the gold ornaments were pledged and Rs 88 lakh was taken away from the firm. During the audit, it was found that the gold that had been already pledged with the finance firm had been re-pledged again, this time with some fake gold jewellery as well, a police officer told Bangalore Mirror.

After the audit and the internal inquiry was completed Lingampeth filed a complaint with the Basaveshwara Nagar police station who have booked Veeranna as the prime accused, Naveen S, Sandeep J, Ramesh, Girish, Sangeeta, and Bhagya as co-accused. Further investigations are underway.
