MUMBAI: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Tuesday directed that all beaches must be shut till April 30 in view of the second wave of Covid-19.
“In continuation and confirmation of the orders, the following additional restrictions need to be strictly followed by all assistant commissioners of wards to control and arrest the spread of coronavirus on war-footing. The assistant commissioners shall ensure that all beaches are closed for visitors till 30th April 2021,” municipal commissioner Iqbal Chahal said in his order issued on Tuesday.
Last month, with massive crowds thronging the beaches in Mumbai, especially on weekends throwing Covid-19 restrictions to the wind, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA from Andheri (West) Ameet Satam had demanded that the popular Juhu beach be made out of bounds of visitors on weekends.
In a letter to municipal commissioner Iqbal Chahal, Satam had said that in the wake of the rising Covid-19 cases, the beach should be shut down for visitors starting Friday to Sunday evening.
“In the wake of the rising Covid-19 cases in the city, it has been observed that there is huge gathering of people during evenings on Juhu beach especially on weekends which may lead to further spread of the virus and in these trying times, it becomes extremely necessary to curb it,” Satam said.
“Hence I request you to kindly consider closing Juhu beach for visitors during evenings on Friday, Saturday and Sunday till the Covid situation in the city comes under control since visiting the beach is definitely not an essential activity,” Satam added.
