Covid-19 in Tamil Nadu: AIADMK govt spent ‘exorbitantly’ on food and accommodation for health workers, minister says | Chennai News – Times of India

PUDUKOTTAI: Tamil Nadu health minister Ma Subramanian on Monday accused the previous AIADMK government of causing a loss to the exchequer by spending “exorbitantly” on facilities for frontline health workers and purchasing Covid-19 management kits at “exorbitant prices.”
Reviewing Covid-19 management and the recently launched Makkalai Thedi Maruthuvam scheme in Pudukottai district, the minister said that the expense on food and accommodation for the doctors and nurses involved in Covid-19 duty was exorbitant during the AIADMK government.
“After May 21 this year, the rate on the high class food was reduced by Rs 150 to Rs 200 per person while it had been purchased for Rs 600 per person. The DMK government reduced the expense on the accommodation by Rs 250 to Rs 300. In terms of food and accommodation alone, we saved Rs 30 lakh to the exchequer through our management,” the health minister told the reporters in Pudukottai.
“PPEs (personal protective equipment) which were purchased for Rs 350 per kit is now being bought for Rs 120 per kit. The rate of N95 mask had been reduced to Rs 22 from the previous price of Rs 80 to Rs 90,” he said.
“They (AIADMK government) had spent two to three times higher than now. We follow a proper tender system and purchase the kits. Our action saves Rs 20 crore to the exchequer,” he said, adding that the committee was investigating the role of people involved in the purchase before initiating legal action.
He exuded confidence that two or three districts would achieve 100% vaccination in a month’s time.
