Contamination in Ghaziabad township water confirmed | Ghaziabad News – Times of India

GHAZIABAD: Days after over 100 residents of Mahagun Puram suddenly fell sick, a report from the health department has confirmed the presence of Hydrogen Sulfide in a water sample taken from the township. Officials said that the contamination could have been caused due to mixing of sewer water with the supply.
The report also stated that the presence of chlorine in the water sample was negligible. Meanwhile, another report from Delhi regarding the presence of bacteria in the water is still awaited. “On 20 March, when the incident took place, we took samples from overhead tanks, and inlet and outlet taps. The report confirms the presence of Hydrogen Sulphide in the sample which may have caused people to fall ill in the society,” said an official from the health department.
“The sewer water may have got mixed up with the potable water and for that, we have asked the GDA and the civic agencies to ensure that any leakage in the pipeline is fixed,” added the official.
“There is another sample test to confirm the presence of Coliform bacteria is awaited. The sample has been sent to Delhi. But, it is clear that the water was contaminated,” said the official.
Ankit Gupta, a resident, said that the residents are using bottled water in the society. “There is still a sense of fear among residents even though ten days have passed since people started falling ill.” He added, “Even now, the TDS count of the water in the society is way above normal. Now, that the official report confirms contamination, we will protest.”
District magistrate Ajay Shankar Pandey said that as per the issue between AOA and the builder is concerned, he has authorised GDA to ensure a smooth handover of maintenance of the society. “After the incident came to our light, I have instructed GDA to look into the matter,” said the DM.
