Chennai Rain: IMD predicts fresh low pressure to form by next week; heavy rains expected in Chennai | Chennai News – Times of India

CHENNAI: A fresh low pressure area is likely to form over south Andaman sea around November 29, the IMD said on Thursday, adding that the cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal, which was to concentrate into a low pressure area, may not intensify. The new system is likely to become more marked and move west-northwestwards during the subsequent 48 hours, the agency said.
“The low pressure did not form because the pressure gradient force (difference in air pressure along a certain area) was not favourable for the wind speeds to pick up and the Coriolis force, which makes the winds rotate or circle, was also weak. Also, the landmass of Sri Lanka was blocking the speed of the rotating winds. So the chances of the pressure dropping also reduced,” said N Puviarasan, director, Area Cyclone Warning Centre, IMD, Chennai.
For the next 48 hours, IMD has forecast thunderstorms with heavy rain over some areas of Chennai and suburbs. Maximum and minimum temperature is likely to be around 30 deg C and 25 deg C respectively.
For Friday, the agency has forecast heavy to very heavy rain in isolated places over Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli and Tenkasi, while Chennai and its neighbours-Chengalpattu, Kanchipuram and Tiruvallur as well as a few northern and interior districts are likely to receive heavy rainfall. Weekend may begin with heavy to very heavy rains over Kanchipuram and Tiruvallur on Saturday while Chennai and a few northern, southern and delta districts may get heavy rainfall.
By Sunday, heavy to very heavy rain may be restricted to isolated places over Tiruvallur, Ranipet and Nilgiris districts, while heavy rain is likely over a few northern districts excluding Chennai, interior and southern districts. On Thursday, rains lashed a few southern districts.
