Businesses run dry with delay in smart city work

Bizmen stage protest, demand BSCL expedite work on Avenue Road

A group of businessmen staged a protest against the delay in ensuring Avenue Road is safe for the public. They were seen shouting slogans holding placards demanding the Bengaluru Smart City Limited (BSCL) to expedite the work on Avenue Road.

“The delay is causing a lot of inconvenience to the businessmen as well as customers. The number of customer footfalls has come down drastically due to the bad condition of the road. Many businessmen have incurred losses,’’ said Vivek of Shanthi Medicals. The businessmen blame the Bengaluru Smart City Ltd (BSCL) authorities. “It becomes slushy whenever it rains and is full of dust during sunny days,’’ said Rani Govindaraju, a landlord.

Pedestrians have to be wary while walking on Avenue Road as there are chances of them falling or getting injured due to the uncovered trenches and stone and concrete slabs. “There is nothing worthy about the quality of work being taken up on Avenue Road since 2012 when the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) replaced the old DMU pipes with new ones,’’ said Prasanna Hathwar.

“Dirty water is overflowing from the manhole but nothing has been done to fix this problem. It has become difficult for me to cope with the bad odour. I am worried about my health since dirty water becomes a breeding place for mosquitoes,’’ said a businessman, on the condition of anonymity.

A BSCL assistant executive engineer said that the work has been progressing as per the schedule. “We worked during the lockdown to complete the work as early as possible. Businessmen had cooperated with us. I do not know what has made them to stage a protest on Thursday,’’ said the BSCL assistant executive engineer.

Ex-BBMP Commissioner N Manjunath Prasad visited Avenue Road in March and directed the BSCL engineers to take up the work on 1.80 km-long Avenue Road in three phases to avoid inconvenience to the businessmen and customers. The work on Avenue Road began in January and is expected to be completed by October.
