American College celebrates 100th birthday of N Sankaraiah | Madurai News – Times of India


MADURAI: In a first for the 140-year-old institution, the American College in Madurai celebrated the 100th birthday of one of its legendary alumni, N Sankaraiah.
Paying accolades to the great leader, college principal Dr Davamani Christober, said they were honoured to have Sankaraiah as their student even now, as he had not completed his final examination because he was arrested for participating in the anti- British protest when there were just 15 days for his final BA examination.
The leader joined American College in 1937 and enrolled in the BA history class. Sankaraiah had always recalled how the American College, with its teaching faculty, had provided a conducive atmosphere for students who had wanted to participate in the freedom struggle.
The Madurai Student Movement was started when Sankaraiah was a student, and he had been the first secretary of the movement, instilling the fire for freedom among the students. Among the leaders who had addressed the students at the behest of Sankaraiah were Subash Chandra Bose and Rajaji.
Minister for food and civil supplies R Sakkarapani, who is also an alumnus of the college, was present at the institute to participate in the birthday celebrations. Sakkarapani said that he was honoured to know that Sankaraiah had been a student of his alma mater.
Former MLA N Nanmaran and Madurai MP Su Venkatesan also participated.
The CPM hoisted the party flag in 100 places in Madurai city and distributed sweets to the public to celebrate their leader’s birthday. Hundred members of DYFI performed a silambam performance and SFI organised blood donation camps.
